Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Saturday urged political parties to reach a consensus on implementing the proposals put forth by the six reform commissions.

"The six reform commissions have made their best efforts to provide recommendations for building a new Bangladesh. Now, our task is to determine how and to what extent we will accept and implement them," he said.

The chief adviser made these remarks in his opening speech at the first meeting of the National Consensus Commission with political parties at the Foreign Service Academy.

“Today’s (Saturday) discussion will be a realistic one, not merely academic, focusing on the reform proposals,” Dr. Yunus said.

He emphasized that if they seize this opportunity to build a new Bangladesh, the nation will remember them for generations to come.

“It is the responsibility of political parties to decide on the structure of society and the implementation of these reforms,” he added.

Noting that the first phase of the interim government had concluded, he said the second phase began on Saturday with the commencement of these discussions, paving the way for a disciplined and democratic Bangladesh, free from autocratic rule.

Recalling the martyrs, the injured, and the fighters of the July uprising, the chief adviser remarked that the opportunity to build a new Bangladesh had arrived.

He urged students, the masses, and all stakeholders to work together to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for change.

“Those who sacrificed their lives entrusted us with the responsibility of formulating new laws to build a better Bangladesh,” he said.

He further said that the experiences of the past six months had strengthened their resolve, with people from all walks of life offering full support to the interim government.

“If this unity is maintained, no force will be able to hinder the progress of building a new Bangladesh,” he said.

He also said: “Those who were ousted by the people are now eager to return. Everyone must remain vigilant to ensure they do not regain control.”

On Thursday, the interim government formed the seven-member National Consensus Commission, led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, to engage with political parties on the recommendations of the six commissions.

The objective is to achieve consensus on various political, constitutional, and electoral reforms.

The National Consensus Commission will complete its consensus-building efforts within a six-month tenure. The Chief Adviser’s Office (CAO) is providing secretarial support to the commission.
